Who are you?

Who are you?

The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.

“Who are YOU?” said the Caterpillar.

This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, “I—I hardly know, sir, just at present—at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.”

With Andrew’s tag, I was to query my Tarot deck on how it sees me. The Major Arcana’s The Hanged Man was it’s reply. Several interpretations immediately came to mind: humble, suspended, in limbo, self-sacrificing, always putting others before me. But also, and perhaps more empowering: new visions, capable of seeing what others don’t, being true to myself. In a sense, both views are right. For every positive there must be a negative, and for every challenge a solution. Lao Tzu’s advice to a seeker of wisdom comes to mind: “When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” When it comes to my deck, and the answers it provides, there is never a final answer—room for thought and contemplation remain. This will be a reading I will come back to again and again.
